Approaches to Psychotherapy, Counseling and Life Coaching.

My approaches to psychotherapy, counseling and life coaching, and the types of issues I work with:

Working as a psychotherapist, transformational counselor and life coach, I offer counseling and therapy services for teens, adults, individuals and couples here in Boulder, Colorado. I also work easily by phone, FaceTime, Zoom and Skype with individuals and couples across the United States, and in many countries around the world.

My Approaches to Psychotherapy and Counseling

My approach to psychotherapy is based on working with clients for over 30 years. I am client-centered, authentic, heart-centered, experiential, creative and intuitive. I offer a variety of therapy methods that are holistic approaches to healing: including Gestalt, Focusing, mindfulness, somatic, body-centered, positive, spiritual and energy-based psychotherapy. My approach is not based on traditional talk-therapy or analysis, though at times this is helpful and necessary. My clients tend to find rapid alleviation of issues and their lives often transform in miraculous ways.

Psychotherapy: A Somatic, Contemplative & Mindful Approach

“Traditional psychotherapy tends to pathologize people’s pain, and generally focuses on changing or fixing undesirable symptoms. From the transpersonal or contemplative point of view, our basic nature is intrinsically healthy but our awareness of this health is often obscured. Contemplative psychotherapy is a process of uncovering this fully awake and aware state. We become liberated from unnecessary suffering through experiencing ourselves in the moment, exactly as we are.” ~ Excerpt from Contemplative Psychotherapy

Holistic Psychotherapy

In contrast with many other types of psychotherapy, holistic psychotherapy focuses not only on a client’s mental and emotional health, but on the totality of a client’s being. This may include one’s relationship to Nature, food, lifestyle, work, sleeping habits, exercise, sexuality, creativity, Spirit, all our relationships, and anything else that comprises our lives.

Picture with words saying Every thing will be okay.Along with Gestalt therapy, Focusing therapy, EFT Tapping, guided somatic (body) sensing and mindfulness practices, we may also engage in creative art expression, movement, and body-orientated work. I also teach my clients to listen to their own intuition and help them develop their own self-healing skills.

When appropriate, I may also share my knowledge and experience as a naturopathic health practitioner and energy healer. Environmental, nutritional, dietary, hormonal, neuroendocrine, energetic, lifestyle and other equally important factors often play a very important role in our mental and emotional well-being. Our emotions, mind, body and spirit are intricately interrelated. Becoming aware of and addressing all these aspects has often proved of great benefit to my clients.

Spiritual Counseling

Spiritual based counseling acknowledges that we are spiritual beings having a physical human experience. We are not broken and we do not need to be fixed. Life is calling us to expand our awareness and connection. Many troubles and suffering fall away as we connect more deeply to our core beings.

Spiritual Counseling includes our body, mind, and Spirit.

In spiritual counseling I directly invite discussion and communication about our spirituality and its connection throughout our lives. We may use meditation, prayer and mindfulness practices to transform any issue, as well as to create a life you love.

It was always frustrating for me that nearly all my therapists and counselors did not recognize or bring into the session my soul and Spirit. This didn’t make sense to me, for it is our soul and Spirit that holds the greatest power for insight and healing, not our mental minds.

The most powerful and deepest healing takes place on the soul or spiritual level. This has certainly been true in my life, and in the lives of many of my clients.

Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt therapy is an experiential form of psychotherapy that emphasizes the present, here and now, rather than analyzing or dwelling on the past. It focuses on the individual’s present experience and helps us to quickly understand, know and accept our own emotions and feelings. Gestalt therapy is a holistic, person-centered and mind-body approach. It is experiential rather than cognitive. I find gestalt therapy highly effective for shifting stuck places, clearing trauma, and resolving many types of relationship issues.

Gestalt therapy raises awareness and allows people to become aware and accepting of themselves in the context of others and the environment. It helps people to integrate their emotional, mental and physical bodies. Gestalt therapy is brilliant and leaves a person feeling whole and with a greater capacity for freedom, energy and joy. Gestalt therapy leads to self-healing, realization, wholeness, transformation and actualization.

In my own journey for healing, as well as with clients, I have found Gestalt therapy to be the most powerful and helpful therapy method. It allows both the client and myself to gain the greatest awareness of all parts of the client’s life, to hold them with understanding, empathy and unconditional acceptance, while becoming fully integrated and whole. Gestalt therapy is very effective in healing childhood wounds, and all types of relationships issues.

Energy Psychology

Energy Psychology works with the whole body-mind system, facilitating rapid positive change.

Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine are based on what Chinese medicine has known for thousands of years. Metaphysical, spiritual teachers and shamans have been teaching for centuries, and our present day physicists are now proving, that all of us, and all our world is based on energy. And with our minds, we affect and can move energy.

“In every culture and in every medical tradition before ours, healing was accomplished by moving energy.” — Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Nobel laureate in Medicine

One of the most well-known energy psychology approaches is Gary Craig’s Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). I learned it sixteen years ago and have used it extensively with tremendous results.

EFT – Emotional Freedom Techniques

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is one of the most effective tools I’ve found for helping my clients resolve issues rapidly. It can be easily learned, and self-applied, though it often takes the skill of an experienced therapist to achieve deep healing and lasting change.

I have used EFT for over 12 years with my clients (by phone and in-person) with amazing results. I have Advanced Certification from Gary Craig, the founder of EFT. I have used EFT with both my psychotherapy and coaching clients with great success. Energy Psychology is revolutionizing the field of psychology and medicine.

Standard EFT involves self-applied tapping with one’s fingers on various acupressure meridians and points on the body while verbalizing and sensing the target symptom or emotional issue. It works very similar to EMDR. It frees up, integrates and balances the energy, allowing the original disturbance (emotion, traumatic memory, or body dysfunction) to be integrated, eliminated or neutralized.

I combine EFT with other forms of therapy, especially somatic sensing, Focusing, and Gestalt to bring about deep healing and transformation, sometimes in an incredibly short time. I rarely anymore solely use physical tapping EFT, rather I combine it with body-centered psychotherapy.

Success with EFT, just like Gestalt or any therapy, depends on the experience and skills of the therapist.

Issues I am experienced with and respond well to my psychotherapy approaches:
